Carla Michael

(Secretary)

As Secretary for Hammer Hunger Inc. Carla Michael is an incredibly valuable resource to our organization and the families we serve. Her wealth of knowledge and experience dealing with the needs of working families helps bring about strong solutions-based results.

Carla obtained a master’s in social work from California State University Los Angeles (CSULA) and is currently a Children’s Social Worker with the Los Angeles County of Children and Family Services. She has a firsthand account of working with impoverished families whose struggle with providing basic needs for their families on a daily basis. This has placed many in a situation where child welfare services often become involved. Her work within this agency has allowed for a wealth of knowledge on community resources and programs to convey to families.

In addition to her extensive background in maternal and child health, Carla has dedicated her time to working directly with families and communities, providing valuable resources and guidance to help them achieve sustainable and secure livelihoods. Her hands-on involvement includes assisting with professional development and leading training sessions to empower families in their pursuit of employment and overall success.

Her work extends beyond advocacy, as she actively engages with initiatives like AAIMM (African American Infant and Maternal Mortality) to address healthcare disparities and promote equitable healthcare. Carla’s educational background and certifications make her a well-rounded expert, and her comprehensive approach to supporting families and communities.

Carla was raised in the inland empire within the city of Pomona. Growing up in a two-parent household did not detour the need for assistance in her family. Although her father worked 3 minimum wage jobs while her mother stayed home with her and one other sibling, there was still a time when they relied on food stamps and other public assistance. Carla’s experience as a youth, coupled with her current work with families and children’s causes her to strive to do more and seek out resources for those who are most vulnerable. Carla has severed on several committees, one of which focuses on eliminating racial disparity and disproportion in the child welfare system. Currently, Carla is working towards obtaining her certification as a ‘doula’, or labor assistant, to provide perinatal and prenatal care to women.
